Interview with... Anne-Laure Le Cunff (Lysa Founder)
This week I was lucky enough to catch up with Anne-Laure, another kick-ass female founder in the health and wellness space. Here's what she said about the ups and downs of entrepreneurship and balancing a healthy lifestyle...
Hi Anne-Laure, please introduce yourself!
"I'm the founder and CEO of Lysa, a smart health assistant that helps you make better food choices. Lots of health apps have a high number of downloads, but poor retention. As a result, few of them have a real impact on people's lifestyle. On a personal level, both my grandma and my mom suffer from diabetes, so I've seen them struggle with their diet for years. I want to empower people get back in control of their diet so they can live a healthier, happier life."
Anne-Laure is certainly ambitious (an essential quality in my opinion!) as, in five years, she hopes to "have created the world's smartest nutritionists, and helped as many people as possible to eat better, be healthier, and feel happier."
Anne-Laure used to manage global marketing for several digital health products at Google, including Google Fit and Android Wear...so it's safe to say she knows her stuff when it comes to health-tech. Her top tip for staying healthy when you're super busy is to "always have easy and healthy options with you, both at home and on-the-go. It's easy to make the wrong choices when you're in a rush, but if all you have in your bag is an apple or a cereal bar, you can't go wrong! Also, don't completely cut stuff you like from your diet. If you like chocolate and it makes you happy, go ahead, have a couple of squares! Eating healthy shouldn't feel restrictive. It's all about eating of everything in moderation." Amen to that...
Of course, as well as staying healthy, founding your own business comes with a whole heap of other challenges. In fact, Anne-Laure says that the very act of stepping out and doing your own thing is the biggest challenge she's ever faced...but on the plus side, "I'm having tons of fun and learning a lot while figuring it out."
Health and wellness is obviously a hugely important fact of Anne-Laure's life. She says it's because "your mental and physical health are the two most important tools you have to do whatever you set to achieve in life. You need to be healthy to have the physical and mental strength necessary to be there for your team, your friends, and your family. Unfortunately, we tend to worry about our health only when it's too late and we're sick, but I believe we would all benefit from being proactive, and caring about our bodies and our minds the same way we care about our finances. Wealth without health is useless."
Looking to the future is an important part of building a business, Anne-Laure says that they're "currently building Lysa, our smart nutrition assistant, and talking to investors so we can build a kick-ass team. In five years, I hope we will have created the world's smartest nutritionists, and helped as many people as possible to eat better, be healthier, and feel happier."
Of course it's not all plain sailing, so what keeps you going when the going get's tough?
"The strong belief that I'm doing the right thing, and that if things go wrong I'll be able to proudly look back and see that I've tried my hardest. I'm also lucky to have an amazing support group through my teammates, friends and family."
And one final top tip for those just starting out?
"Don't wait until you feel ready! Perfectionism and procrastination have this in common: they prevent you from acting sooner rather than later. The quicker you act, talk to people, and test your ideas, the quicker you'll get feedback, make progress and know if you're going in the right direction."
